Philippians 4:6-8 (NLT) Part 4
"Don't worry about anything; instead pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus."
Out of all the verses in the Bible, this passage of Scripture is my favorite one. It is so simple, yet extremely powerful. When reading verses 6 through 7, I believe there are five easy steps that one can use to live out this daily walk called life.
Step 4: Thank him for all he has done
One of the most popular holidays of our country is Thanksgiving-a day when families gather to celebrate the blessings of the year. A well-known and commonly shared tradition is to verbalize what one is thankful for. It blows my mind to think that there is only one day designated for expressing our appreciation. Why is it during Thanksgiving that the idea of being appreciative is emphasized greatly? I wonder how different our lives would be if we made a conscious decision to be grateful daily. God has been, is, and will forever be so good to us. Just for being our Creator and Father, I believe He deserves our heartfelt thanks and praise.
I've come to realize that whenever I am thankful, I feel an overwhelming sense of joy. In essence, it is difficult to be grateful and grumpy at the same time. Research by psychologists proves that gratitude is associated with greater happiness. Being thankful helps center one's mind on all that is good and well, and it guards the heart against complaining. It is no coincidence that this verse encourages us to thank God for all He has done. We are to even give thanks in the midst of challenging situations, which we may not consider good. Nothing that we face catches Him by surprise. Because He is a Good God, we can trust and rest that if He has allowed it, it will be good.
Today, we have something to be thankful for. At the very least, we have breath in our lungs. Never has there been a day when God has charged us for breathing or using His oxygen. The fact that we are alive is all the reason to rejoice! Gratefulness opens our eyes to behold all of the wondrous things that God has done. Let us choose to live a grateful life!
Prayer:
Lord, help me to be thankful in every circumstance. Allow me to see that everything in my life happens for a reason, and You are in control of it all. God, help me make this lifestyle of gratitude something more than a once-a-year event. Please, help me live out a life filled with thankfulness and gratitude to you daily.
Amen
