Proverbs 6:20-23
"My son, obey your father’s commands, and don’t neglect your mother’s instruction. Keep their words always in your heart. Tie them around your neck. When you walk, their counsel will lead you. When you sleep, they will protect you. When you wake up, they will advise you. For their command is a lamp, and their instruction a light; their corrective discipline is the way to life."
We see in verse 20 the weight of the importance obedience, especially to our parents, has. God has given each and every one of us individuals who are above us in authority, and wisdom instructs us to submit to them and obey their instructions. That aspect deals with us as human beings, but the same goes for the Lord. His words are to always be in our hearts as they guide our steps. The Word of God is our protection, advice, and light on our path throughout life. Wisdom insists that we never disregard what the Lord tells us to do. His words are life, and because He gives us what the world could never offer, we must obey.
Proverbs 6:30-33
"Excuses might be found for a thief who steals because he is starving. But if he is caught, he must pay back seven times what he stole, even if he has to sell everything in his house. But the man who commits adultery is an utter fool, for he destroys himself. He will be wounded and disgraced. His shame will never be erased.
The latter portion of chapter 6 speaks on wisdom for our everyday living. The one who steals from others is simply a fool. The adulterous man (or woman) acts out of the flesh, not the Lord, and chooses destruction for himself. Wisdom from the Lord helps keep us from stumbling into these sins, wickedness, and utter foolishness. As long as our gaze and hearts are towards God, we have no reason to stray or fall short.
