PROVERBS 23:4-23

VS 4-5 "Don’t wear yourself out trying to get rich. Be wise enough to know when to quit. In the blink of an eye wealth disappears, for it will sprout wings and fly away like an eagle."

As people, it is so easy to get caught up in chasing after the wrong things. Earthly wealth and riches have our society in a stronghold, yet the Bible warns against that pursuit. We are to be wise when it comes to the way we strive after things because, at the end of the day, those riches won't last. It is important that we chase after things that will last and that matter: the things of the Lord.

V9: "Don’t waste your breath on fools, for they will despise the wisest advice."

This verse cuts straight to the point when it comes to how we are to associate with foolish people. We are advised to not even waste our breath. To choose to be a fool is to choose a lifestyle that lacks wisdom. Simply associating with foolish people is a waste of time, so don't bother. Instead, surround yourself with people of wisdom.

V12: "Commit yourself to instruction; listen carefully to words of knowledge."

Words of wisdom and knowledge should not be taken lightly. We are instructed to listen very carefully to these words as they are spoken to help us grow and live Godly lives.

VS 17-18: "Don’t envy sinners, but always continue to fear the Lord. You will be rewarded for this; your hope will not be disappointed."

Instead of developing a posture of envy and covet, we need to keep our mind set on fearing the Lord. When we wholeheartedly fear Him, we receive a blessing and a reward, something that envy could never bring.

VS 19-21: "My child, listen and be wise: Keep your heart on the right course. Do not carouse with drunkards or feast with gluttons, for they are on their way to poverty, and too much sleep clothes them in rags."

Wisdom leads us on the right path. When we walk that path, we won't stray and fall into the path with fools.

V23: "Get the truth and never sell it; also get wisdom, discipline, and good judgment."

One of the most important gifts the Lord gives is wisdom, and we must never swap it out or sell it in exchange for an earthly, materialistic, and temporary gift.
