The Blessings Of The Beatitudes (Part 3/9)

Updated: Jun 3, 2022

The Sermon On The Mount is famously known as Jesus' most well-known sermon. This message comes from Matthew 5:3-11, and within that passage of Scripture are nine blessings from the Lord. Those blessings were made to encourage us as believers, and be the turning point to truly look in God as our hope. Over these next few weeks, we will be taking time to break each of these blessings down, so enjoy!

Matthew 5:3-11 NLT

"God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted. God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth. God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied. God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy. God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God. God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God. God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers."

Humility is a character trait that is very hard to maintain. As I have said many times before, it is hard to be humble. If we are honest, it is almost as if it is encrypted in our sinful human makeup to want to always put ourselves before others. But, you know what? That is where humility comes into play. Jesus (the one speaking in this portion of Scripture) says that God blesses those who are humble. Even though it is a struggle to want to show humility, we have the hope of a reward coming from that. That reward is the inheritance of the whole earth! Think about it; it is almost like Jesus is saying if you can give up just a little bit of yourself, what you will gain will be worth so much more than the little bit you lost. My greatest take away from this passage is that God sees and acknowledges the little things. He doesn't forget about them, even if we do. So, next time you feel tempted and want to put your wants above those of others, remember that being humble brings so much more than selfishness ever could.

Prayer:

Dear Lord, help me want to be humble. Let me get to the point where all I want to do is serve and love others, even to the point of sacrificing my desires. I thank You for Your goodness towards us.

Amen
