The Sermon On The Mount is famously known as Jesus' most well-known sermon. This message comes from Matthew 5:3-11, and within that passage of Scripture are nine blessings from the Lord. Those blessings were made to encourage us as believers, and be the turning point to truly look in God as our hope. Over these next few weeks, we will be taking time to break each of these blessings down, so enjoy!
Matthew 5:3-11 NLT
"God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted. God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth. God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied. God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy. God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God. God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God. God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers."
The definition of a blessing is "divine favor and protection from God and God alone." A blessing is something that stems only from the Father Himself, and we get nine in this portion of Scripture alone!
Verse three says that God blesses those who are poor and realize that they need Him. To be poor means to be in a state of complete and total desolation and poverty. When one is poor, they must rely upon someone or something to help get them out of that state until they can fend for themselves and become independent. Now hear me out: being poor isn't all bad. In fact, it is when we are at our lowest that we then learn to submit our ideas and mindset to the Lord and go to Him completely abandoned.
Once we truly realize our need for the Lord in our circumstances and submit ourselves to His Hands, we then have the promise of the inheritance into His Kingdom. What I want to leave you with today is that to truly accept the gift of Heaven, you must acknowledge the fact that you need Jesus. There is no other way but Him. That blessing that comes with that submission is far greater and so much more than any "comfortable" yet poor state this world offers.
Prayer:
Lord, please, help me to get out of the poor state I'm in, and let me see how much I truly need You. You are worth so much more than anything this world could give me, and I thank You for that blessing.
